Toast Grows But Without A Domain Name

Toast Grows But Without A Domain Name

Yesterday, I spent a few minutes over coffee firing off to my gardening whanau my thoughts on what to do with ‘February planting advice’. Mostly bin it. This year has been such absolute heinous suckage in Auckland, what’s the point. More on that later. But almost immediately after firing it off, my eldest daughter texted me.

Mom you need to start another blog Go Go now! Goooood! Make it about gardening and your learnings on the property Keep a record of everything you write online and I bet you money in 5 years time you'll be writing a book Off you go Have a good day

Note to adult children everywhere, this is how you make a grown woman cry. I immediately sniff sniff sniffled. I’ve never actually cared even a tiny bit about converting my blog to books. The writing has always been a form of mental masturbation combined with narcissistic brain bubbles sprinkled with the spicy residue of an overinflated ego. But. BUT! My children — when they were no longer children — like my writing. So it took awhile, eh? But here we are.

The blog has been through three iterations. I won’t promise I’ll sort that shit out on the web site any time soon but just for reference:

  • Sailing - From about 2005 to 2013 I wrote about cruising with a family. (ToastFloats Era)

  • Change - Took a bit of a break and then in 2015 or thereabouts I started writing about change. (ToastChanges Era)

  • Travel - Just as I was kind of losing the Change plot, DrC and I went to Europe and then the thing was quite explicitly just a simple travel blog. (ToastTravels? I don’t think I ever got my act together enough for that to be a thing.)

This is going to be the ToastGrows phase. I have absolutely no intention of doing much to add to the endless, impressive, and thorough contribution of gardeners, permaculture experts, and lifestyle block owners in whose wake DrC and I travel. This isn’t for someone who themselves is heading down this path. There are so many better resources.

This is for Jaime. And my other gardening whanau. And DrC. And as always for myself, because keeping a diary in full view of everyone is for some reason part of my brand and something I’ve missed.
